MEMORIAL RIDE

On Sunday, April 20, 2008 immediately after our chapter meeting we will hold our first memorial ride in honor and memory of KC-Metro Blue Knight members who have gone on to Heaven-1. Unfortunately the records available to me only list 5 chapter members (see above). I know there are others, but even though their names may not appear here, they will, nevertheless, be in our hearts and minds.

For many chapter members these men were close friends, while others knew them only as fellow Blue Knights. At the time of their departing we mourned and paid our respects while struggling with the emotional turmoil of having our lives made fuller by their presence and then made emptier with their passing. Through their unique character, each of these men immortalizing himself in our hearts and minds. They live on in our memory and in the stories we tell of past rides, events, and gatherings. On other occasions they are a part of our more quiet, personal and private reflections. I’d like to believe that as we ride in memoriam their spirit rides with us.

Since this memorial ride was proposed I have struggled to find the appropriate way to pay respect to these men.
It was Tim Hicks who put it in perspective for me when I asked for help. Tim wrote:

“The thing that keeps coming back to my mind is that it should be a ride that honors the same thing that all of us, past and present, share and that is the wind in our face. It's the journey not the destination! I would like to suggest that after the meeting at the Alamo that we ride the " I-435 circle" that covers the majority of the Kansas City Metro Area. After leaving the Alamo we could go South on I-435 and follow it down through Kansas City Mo, Leawood, Overland Park, Lenexa, Shawnee, Kansas City KS and then North to Platte City and then back over to the area of 435 and Parvin Road where we began. A full circle in honor of our circle of friendship and the brotherhood of the badge. Another aspect of this route is that for those who would not have the time or will to travel the full route, they can peel off as needed without effecting other riders. In this way it is actually a ride and not a stop, and no one person who has passed on to Heaven One is remembered more than another.” Tim 'Ham' Hicks

Thanks to Tim "Ham" Hicks we have our first memorial ride plan.
